The Liturgy of the Hours—sometimes called "The Office"—is a liturgical prayer of the Church that is based on the ancient practice of reciting the Psalms, something which the Gospels indicates that Jesus, like many Jews of his time, did as well. Indeed, the 150 Psalms form the backbone of this prayer, which also incorporates hymns and readings from Scripture. This prayer is not only that of monks, religious, and priests in the Church, but also many lay people as well, people who simply desire to pray together in a regular fashion.
